March 2022 Longleaf Partnership Council Meeting Recap

The Longleaf Partnership Council (LPC) met along with partners and friends virtually on March 10, 2022, for the first LPC meeting of the new year.  These regular meetings give LPC members and partners the chance to attend to the business needs of the LPC and discuss upcoming and ongoing activities in support of longleaf pine restoration to reach the eight-million-acre goal called for in The Range-wide Conservation Plan for Longleaf Pine.

Earlier in the year, the LPC Leadership Team and Federal Coordinating Committee (FCC) both met to discuss major strategic actions for 2022 and beyond, upcoming funding opportunities, and how to align efforts with that funding.  From these meetings, a proposed timeline of actions was developed and presented to the LPC to achieve priorities and set the course for an updated Conservation Plan.

The meeting agenda also included presentations on the following topics:

  • An exercise to align ALRI and federal priorities with projects and funding opportunities in Ecosystem Restoration, Community Support, Wildfire Risk Reduction, Equity, Climate Mitigation and Adaptation, and Clean Water;
  • The partnership between the USFWS Partners Program and the American Forest Foundation to support private landowners with land stewardship and at-risk species conservation;
  • A spotlight on the Center for Heirs Property whose mission is to protect heirs’ property and promote sustainable use of land to provide increased economic benefit to historically underserved landowners through education, legal services, and technical assistance; and
  • A breakout session with the ALRI working groups to educate and invite LPC members and others to actively participate in the working groups.

The next LPC meeting will be held in person on May 23-24, 2022, in Pensacola, FL, in conjunction with a 25th anniversary celebration of the Gulf Coastal Plain Ecosystem Partnership (GCPEP).
