The Longleaf Partnership Council (LPC) concluded another successful two day meeting in Baton Rouge, LA on November 2-3. The LPC traditionally convenes twice a year to promote broader understanding, coordination, and participation in ongoing activities for longleaf pine restoration. It was great to be back in the western portion of the longleaf range, and Council members buzzed with excitement to discuss the latest happenings across the longleaf community.

A variety of important topics were discussed during the meeting, such as:

  • Opportunities for landowners to connect over conservation interests;
  • Latest news regarding at-risk species;
  • Gulf mitigation funding and opportunities for longleaf;
  • Prescribed fire updates;
  • Forest Inventory and Analysis;
  • Range-wide mapping;
  • Strategies and actions for 2016-2018;
  • Seed supply trends;
  • Longleaf local implementation teams; and
  • Communications and outreach.

At the conclusion of the scheduled presentations, Council members were also given the opportunity to give their own respective reports to the group.

Council members continue to work on facilitating the accomplishment of longleaf pine restoration activities consistent with the goals of the Range-Wide Conservation Plan. To steer the LPC into 2016, Troy Ettel of The Nature Conservancy was welcomed as the new Chair for the Council.  Additionally, Jim Guldin, Ph.D. of the USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station was nominated as the Vice Chair of Council.  With this new leadership and under the guidance of former Chair Kevin McIntyre of the Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center, the LPC is no doubt in great hands for the new year!

After a great two days, the Council looks forward to meeting again in April, 2016 in St. Simmons Island, GA.
