Quail and Fire: leaving a legacy for fire ecology
Quail and Fire: leaving a legacy for fire ecology
Tall Timbers Plantation Research Station and Land Conservancy in Tallahassee, Florida, was founded in 1958 to conduct research on the effects of fire on quail and other types of wildlife. After 50 years of research and prescribed burning in the area, quail habitat has been restored and so have the habitats of other animals such as birds, reptiles and amphibians.
Eric Staller is a wildlife biologist and land manager for Tall Timbers, and he has seen the first hand positive effects of prescribed burning on quail habitat. “Years of management has not only worked to restore quail, but wild turkey and deer are now in abundance. This is important because there is so much land in Florida that is privately owned.”
Natural Resources Conservation Service provides financial and technical assistance to Tall Timbers for the work through Farm Bill programs such as the Environmental Quality Improvement Program.
